Heat Exchanger Tubes

These are the simplest types of heat exchangers. Two fluids one cold and one hot move in the opposite or same direction. The configuration of these types of exchangers is concentric. When the fluids enter and leave at the same end the are parallel flow heat exchangers and when they leave at the opposite end they are known as counter flow heat exchangers.

Cross flow

The fluids can also flow perpendicular to each other and these are known as cross flow heat exchangers. There are two main types of cross flow heat exchangers – finned and unfinned tubular. Both liquids remain unmixed in finned tubular heat exchangers. In the unfinned exchanger the fluids can flow in all directions and get mixed.

Shell and tube

This type of heat exchanger is composed of a shell that contains a large number of tubes. There are different types of shell and tube designs available with us. If the tube is curved in the shape of a U the it is known as U-tube heat exchanger. The tubes can also be straight with one or two passes. If the fluid enters from one side and comes out from the other then it is known as single pass heat exchanger. If however, it enters and exits on the same side then it is known as it is known as two pass heat exchanger. Sometimes baffles are installed to guide the fluid through the sides of the shell.

Compact heat exchanger

In a compact heat exchanger there is high heat transfer area per unit volume. The designs of compact heat exchangers vary a lot and there are many different types available. The plate and frame heat exchanger design consists of corrugated or stacked plates which have been bonded together. This configuration ensures that the fluid is spread out over the multiple plates. There is also the plate and fin heat exchanger in which the fins are inserted in between the plates. The plates are parallel and the fluid flows through these fins. The fins are wavy, triangular or perforated.
