How many types of flanges are there?

There are about 13 different types of flanges and those made from mild steel are quite sturdy and last a long time. Let us look at some of the main types of flanges:

Welding neck flange

This type of flange is normally used in high –pressure and high/low temperature applications. These applications require the flow of the fluid to be unrestricted. As there are no pressure drops there is no negative effects as turbulence and corrosion of the metals which are close to the flanged joints.

Long welding neck flanges

Long welding neck flanges are similar to the welding neck flanges except that the neck of the flange is extended and acts like a boring extension. These are normally used on columns, vessels or barrels. There are two types of long neck flanges – the heavy barrel type and the equal barrel type.

Slip on flange

A slip on flange is connected to a pipe or the fittings by two fillet welds out of which one is executed outside the cavity and the other is executed inside the cavity of the flange. These flanges have a larger bore size compared to the outer diameter of the connecting pipe. These flanges are also called hub flanges and they are slim and compact in shape. The other types of flanges include socket weld flange, lap joint flange, threaded flange, blind flange and many others.

Are flanges standard?

Our flanges are standardized from ASTM and the other standards meant for flanges include ASME, API, MSS and others.
